    RugGear RG440 Rugged MCX Radio | 5G RG-440

The RugGear RG440 is a rugged 5G Mission-Critical Services (MCX) radio designed for high-priority voice dispatch, emergency response, and wide-area data communication across Australian commercial operations. Built with physical rotary dials and dedicated hardware controls, it delivers the fast, tactile operation of a conventional two-way radio backed by the bandwidth, low latency, and security of public 5G carriers and private industrial networks.

    Performance and Processing Power

The RG440 is built on Qualcomm's octa-core QCM6490 processor operating up to 2.7 GHz, delivering processing performance for high-throughput 5G packet routing, real-time encryption, and mission-critical voice codecs. The unit runs on the enterprise-tuned RG-OS 14 operating system and is provisioned with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage to support fleet applications, mapping overlays, and background lone-worker protection services. Designed as a specialised data-only hardware platform that bypasses legacy 2G and 3G networks, the internal architecture dedicates its modem and radio frequency pathways to high-speed 4G LTE and 5G communications.

    Display and Input Design

Operational status, signal telemetry, active talkgroups, and caller IDs are rendered on a 2.4-inch IPS display (240 x 320 pixels) shielded by 3rd generation Corning® Gorilla® Glass. Ergonomics are optimised for field operators wearing heavy work gloves. The top housing features a rotary talkgroup knob for switching channels, alongside a dedicated red SOS emergency button. The front deck features programmable keys (M1 and M2) flanking a central power button, while the lateral chassis provides a tactile Push-to-Talk (PTT) switch and dedicated volume buttons. A front-facing 8 MP autofocus camera enables live video streaming and on-scene incident documentation directly back to central control rooms.

    Connectivity and Mission-Critical Communications

The RG440 delivers extensive broadband connectivity tailored for Australian public carriers and private industrial LTE/5G deployments. The modem supports global 5G bands (n1, n2, n3, n5, n7, n8, n12, n14, n20, n25, n28, n30, n38, n40, n41, n48, n66, n71, n77, n78, n79) and 4G LTE-FDD/TDD bands, including Band 28 (700 MHz) for wide-area coverage across regional transport routes. For private enterprise installations, the terminal supports Band 48 / n48 (CBRS) and Band 68 (PPDR), alongside 3GPP Release 15 MCX compliance, enhanced Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services (eMBMS), and PTCRB/GCF certifications. QoS priority handling is supported across QCI classes 1–9, 65, 66, 67, 69, and 70 to ensure emergency voice calls preempt standard data traffic during network congestion.

Carrier flexibility is enabled by dual-SIM capability using one physical nano-SIM slot and an embedded eSIM. On-site wireless networking features Wi-Fi 6 (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax/e/k/r/v) with fast roaming protocols, and can function as a mobile hotspot providing high-speed cellular routing for up to 16 external client devices. Peripheral pairing uses Bluetooth 5.2 and NFC. Geolocation is guided by multi-constellation GNSS (GPS, A-GPS, GLONASS, A-GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou). Physical interfaces include an 8-pin lateral connector for secured wired audio peripherals, a sealed USB Type-C port (USB 3.1), and a 2-pin base charging interface.

    Audio Output and Voice Clarity

To ensure critical dispatch messages are heard in noisy industrial plants, railway sidings, and construction sites, the rugged RG440 features an independent intelligent hardware noise cancellation module. This DSP architecture filters out constant machinery noise, engine idle, and wind interference, channeling clear audio through an amplified forward-facing loudspeaker outputting up to 105 dB.

    Battery Life and Power Infrastructure

This rugged radio is equipped with a standard removable 2,400 mAh Lithium-ion battery pack engineered for balanced handheld ergonomics during standard shifts. For intensive 24/7 rosters, extended field operations, or continuous mobile hotspot use, enterprise fleets can specify the optional high-capacity 4,800 mAh battery pack for extended shift runtime. Charging is supported through the USB 3.1 Type-C interface, single-bay desktop cradles, or multi-unit gang chargers using the dedicated 2-pin base charging contacts.

    Usability

Measuring 139.0 x 70.7 x 34.1 mm (excluding top rotary knob and antenna) and weighing 302 g with its standard battery, the RugGear RG440 provides a balanced, rugged two-way radio form factor engineered for single-handed operation, duty-belt clips, and chest harness rigs. It is purpose-built for the following enterprise workflows:

    • Emergency Response & Public Safety: Coordinate multi-agency incident teams using 3GPP MCX voice, video streaming, and priority QCI preemption across public LTE/5G and dedicated Band 68 networks.

    • Mining & Heavy Industrial Private 5G: Integrate field operators into private cellular networks (including Band 48 CBRS) across remote mine sites, processing plants, and port facilities.

    • Transport, Rail & Port Logistics: Maintain continuous voice communication and dispatch tracking across freight yards and long-distance transport routes via Band 28 carrier infrastructure.

    • Mobile Incident Hotspot Provisioning: Deploy the RG440 as an on-scene mobile broadband gateway to share high-speed 5G connectivity with up to 16 field tablets, laptops, or inspection cameras.

    Rugged Durability

The RugGear RG440 is built inside a reinforced, impact-absorbing polycarbonate housing designed to withstand mechanical shock, industrial vibration, and daily field handling. The 2.4-inch display is protected by chemically strengthened 3rd generation Corning® Gorilla® Glass to resist surface abrasion and face-drop fractures. Internal environmental telemetry includes integrated accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetic compass, and barometric pressure sensors to support automated man-down detection, tilt alerts, and lone worker safety monitoring.
